Poll!
How much do you like the battle aspect of RPGs like MARDEK?
It's the only part I care about; I skip dialogue.
It's my favourite part; I endure dialogue to get to more fighting.
I like it as much as any other part of the game.
I dislike it; I endure it so then I can get to see more plot.
I hate it; I do what I can to avoid battles and wish they weren't there.
I don't play those sorts of games.

Raider: Episode 2

Music!
One of my creative hobbies is musical composition! I compose music in a Modern Classical/Game-like style, apparently. You can find a selection of my compositions free for download here.
Most of them are in the midi file format, making their size infinitesmal, but their quality much lower than an mp3. The playback also depends on your midi player.
Right-click and select 'Save As' to save the music to your computer, maybe!

You can comment on each piece of music, and peoples' opinions and feedback would be very, very appreciated! Tell me what you do and don't like, please!

Also, though I do compose music for my games, that doesn't mean that all music I compose is meant for games! Agh! Most of my music is composed just for the sake of listening to, for enjoyment, not for any kind of situation in a game. Most of it wouldn't fit anywhere in a game at all.
And yet people seem to so often comment saying "I can imagine this being in [part of a game]!"...

The music is in three different formats.

  • All pieces have a MIDI file associated with them. This is the file format that I compose in, and it's made up of numerical data rather than soundwaves, and as such is very small. But the numbers that make up the file refer to certain instrument sounds that need to be played, while not actually strictly defining the instrument sound itself... So one midi player could have a 'violin' instrument sound that sounds very different to the 'violin' instrument sound on mine. As such, this means that often, the midis will not sound the same to you as they did to me when I composed the music and recorded it for use in a game (if it's in a game, that is).
  • Some pieces of music have mp3 files to download, which, being strictly-defined sound waves, sound exactly as I intended but are considerably larger in size. For the sake of my bandwidth, I've not got many of those here yet, but if there are any that you would particularly want me to add the mp3, I'm open to requests.
  • A few of the pieces also have what's called a 'sib' file associated with them. I use a sheet music notation program called 'Sibelius' to compose, and .sib files are its native format. There's a browser plugin called 'Scorch' which you can get to view them in the browser; it's linked to on the sib file pages. What this does is allow you to watch the sheet music as it plays along, and see how I laid out the notes. I for one find it fascinating to see the sheet music of pieces that I know, so perhaps some of you will be similarly interested by this. Keep in mind that Scorch's midi soundset is different to the one on my computer and different to the one of midi players, so yet again, the Scorch files will sound different to how I intended them or how I hear them. (All the Scorch-played sib files sound wrong to me on this site, but fine in the Sibelius program itself...)

Well, I haven't managed to get one done every day, but I've not given up entirely after missing a few days!
This one is a piano solo, and it might be a bit odd in places (you may think some notes are 'wrong'), but I find it interesting or something anyway...

This was a second stab at getting the sonata form correctly, but again I suppose I went off track and did something else instead so it can't technically be called a 'sonata'.
I don't know why I didn't upload these in February... But I'm doing so now because I've not been keeping up with my daily compositions at all!

Not-a-Sonata 1

This is another piece I composed while teaching myself more about music theory, but never released. It was meant to be of proper Sonata form originally, but for some reason I can't recall, I never managed that and turned it into this instead.
(For those of you that don't know, you can't just call any old piece of music a 'sonata' just because you feel like it. It has to have a certain structure, sort of like how you can't call a pig a bird because it doesn't have avian anatomy... y'know?!?)

Egads! This is older than I thought!
I don't actually know as much as I'd like about musical theory (that is, harmonics stuff, which chords follow which, etc), so this year I've been trying to learn, on and off, from online tutorials.
I made a few practice pieces like this to test what I was learning, and never meant to release them, but I decided that I might as well upload them anyway for the sake of completeness...

Gasp. I managed to keep this up for longer than one day! But can I do three?!
Anyway, this isn't a piano solo, but it's not very interesting since again it was sort of forced rather than inspired... There are loads of bits that could have been so much better, but rather than refining these 'daily compositions' to perfection, I'll just leave them as 'rough sketches' so then I can quickly move onto the next one.

As part of my daily timetable thing, I've decided to include an hour for 'composing music'; forcing myself to try to do SOMETHING even if I'm not inspired or anything. I'm hoping that this will lead to improvement, and more music; I haven't been composing much at all recently.
This one is a sort of uninspired piano piece, my first try, but other attempts won't all just be piano solos.

This and the last piece were initially attempts to compose a Main Theme for CARDECK... I composed a few bars of several potential themes but none of them seemed right. Some I liked musically though, even if they weren't appropriate, so I expanded them into full pieces in their own right, unrelated to CARDECK.
This doesn't loop.

Hmm... This is an odd piece. I wanted it to sound somewhat unusual, as I tend to like odd things such as unusual time signatures and approaches that generally just don't sound like most neat, refined, 'good' music...
It turned out to be annoyingly 'repetitive' in parts, perhaps, and I'm not exactly in love with it, but it's been so long since I've composed anything at all that I might as well upload it!

I've not composed anything in AGES, so I composed this with much rustiness.
It's a waltz, of sorts, but only vaguely and only in a sort of technical sense. I doubt anyone could dance to it at all.
"Whimsical" because it's rather 'random' and clearly made up as I was going along...
Hopefully the rustiness will wear off in a while...

Dreamscape III

Another one... Again, it's "abstract" and has no clear tune or consistent rhythm, instead being unfocused and crudely assembled, like a dream.
As in a dream, the "good bits" and the clear images may be fleeting.
(Again, I say: "I doubt many Youth Of Todays will much care for this style of composition!"!)

Another abstract, dreamy piece. The description for the last one applies to this, too.
It lacks a clear "tune", and will likely be unfollowable either in certain parts, or throughout the entire thing...
I like it *because* it's odd! But again, I'm unsure of its appeal amongst the audience of this site...

Another 'experimental' piece. It's a dream. It lacks typical harmony or a clear melody; this is meant to relate to how dreams don't have a clear, detailed picture like reality; they're more of a "vague idea" or something. They also tend to change direction often, as does this.
Again, this is abstract, and not conventionally harmonic, so I'm unsure of its appeal... I composed it ages ago, but never submitted it here until now because I assumed nobody would like it...

Madness!

Added on: 15/05/08
Duration: 3:00
Views: 1726
This rather old piece was an interesting experiment, a deviation of the typical melodic musical form that I usually use. It starts off completely "random", tuneless, chaotic; many of the notes were actually added by clicking the staves randomly without direction. This symbolised a fractured mind, insanity, etc. Someone in a mental asylum, I thought.
As the piece goes on, though, order begins to emerge from the chaos... I pictured this as the mental patient getting psychiatric help sessions, and gradually moving towards sanity (somehow).
At the end, he's almost cured, but there are still bits of the madness there (some vaguely dissonant bits or irregular rhythms), but he's certainly glad to be free of the torment, and it concludes with a happy tone.

I like it, but since it's "abstract" in many ways, I'm unsure if it would appeal to a wider audience...

Anyway, this is music telling a story, with just music alone. Just one instrument. No lyrics, which modern popular music relies so much on to get any meaning or story across...

This was originally meant to be for MARDEK 3, but I got carried away and went completely away from the original mood! I liked what I was doing though, so I decided to finish the piece, but I won't be using it in MARDEK 3.
Just out of curiosity though, if you listen to this, tell me what you think it would be appropriate for if it WAS used in a game! What does it make you think of? What mood does it create?

This is a strange piece, because I really like so many parts of it, yet at the same time it feels flat and not attention-grabbing at all... Hmm.
It's divided into three parts: Light of the Dark Moon, Seeking the Dark Moon, and Exploring the Dark Moon. Though I don't know if it's clear where one part ends and another begins, but it doesn't really matter.
It gives me strong mental imagery and memories... but they're personal things that are too dull to explain!

This one, I think, was inspired by listening to some of Danny Elfman's music in either the Corpse Bride or Nightmare Before Christmas... He has such an effective style for creating elegantly haunting, sort of spooky melodies... I wish I was half as skilled!
So this is a waltz - of sorts - meant to make you think of, uh, bones. I bet it doesn't.

Quest 1

Added on: 17/05/09
Duration: 18:32
Views: 746
This was an interesting experiment!
It's a very long piece, because I wanted to try to tell a full story using a piece of music... I know it's not exactly an original idea, but at the time, I thought it was rather interesting.
You might recognise the World's Saviours' Theme at the beginning; I got their Theme from this.
The start bit is meant to represent a generic Hero, posing valiantly.
He then gets on his horse and rides hastily across the glens or something. (Section 1)
He arrives in a quiet forest, somewhat magical... (Section 2)
He finds an ancient ruin in the forest... (Section 3)
As he walks through it, he starts to feel as if something's tracking him... Shadows dart about, he feels wary ("Bet-ter watch my step..."). His heart seems to beat faster and faster and he speeds up, as the shadows seem to get larger and faster, so he starts to run, and- gasp! A DRAGON!
He falls backwards at the size and majesty of the mighty beast...
But wait! The creature only wants to talk, it seems. (Section 4)
It converses with the Hero, telling him about a human sorcerer (evil, of course), nearby (DUN... DUN... DUN... DUN...!; his four-chord theme), who's been wreaking havoc on the forest or something.
It mentions his name, and it brings back unhappy memories for the Hero... Apparently the sorcerer destroyed his village, or inflicted some other emotional wound on him.
The dragon asks the Hero to help to defeat him.
The Hero accepts, and the dragon offers to take him to the sorcerer's lair...
The Hero rides on the dragon's back through the skies! (Section 5)
Through the forest at first, but then they break through the canopy and the Hero is whisked through the sky and marvels at the amazing views as he travels at high speed, high above the world...
The dragon drops the Hero off at the Dark Fortress of the evil sorcerer. (Section 6)
He explores... It's very dark and evil. Dramatic!
Eventually, the Hero reaches the top, and confronts the evil sorcerer. (Listen for his 4-chord theme!)
Arrogantly, the sorcerer summons some tiny imps to deal with the Hero. (Section 7)
He swings his sword frantically around, trying to hit the tiny, evasive creatures.
But obviously he succeeds eventually, what with the amazing power of his righteousness or whatever.
The sorcerer is annoyed. (4 bar theme!)
He does battle with the Hero personally. (Section 8)
He fights casually and confidently using his magic at first, and this lasts quite a while...
(Listen out for the Hero's Theme! Followed by the Sorcerer's!)
But when the Hero seems to be winning (his theme plays, or a variation thereof), the sorcerer transforms into a giant black monster for some reason! Gasp!
The battle gets more dramatic...
But it doesn't last as long as the last bit. The Hero quickly and valiantly slays the might beast, and as he does so, the stained glass windows behind them (there has to be some of these!) shatter, showing the sun rising, filling the once-dark place with light...
Happiness, yay!
Pleased with his victory, the the Hero heads back down through the Fortress...
And either his horse or the dragon appears from nowhere and he rides off again, along the horizon with the sun in the background, and a variation of section 1 plays! (Section 9)

Isn't that interesting?!
The sections sort of flow into eachother, so it's not easy to know where one ends and another starts unless you have my mind, or if you've listened to it a few times maybe!

It's sort of simplistic and repetitive, but 'peculiar' in parts, which I find appealing...
It gives me an 'American feel' for some odd reason, like music by Gershwin or Copeland or other such composers, even though it bears little resemblance to their music...

It's largely because instead of giving up when I thought an idea wasn't working, I just tried to finish it until the end before moving on to the next one.

At this point, I was straying away from pieces that actually sounded apt to be nocturnes, and basically just using the 'nocturne' title for them for the sake of keeping them as a series...
I had distinct imagery of like... orange cogs or something when making this? I think?
Strange...

Most of my piano music is unplayable, because it would require more hands than most people have...
So, I decided to compose a series of easy nocturnes that I COULD play.
Most of them turned out too insipid for me to even want to attempt to play them though, so the idea was a bit of a failure.
Oh well!

This one was meant to represent a drak, a small dragon-like thing that you can find in MARDEK and some of my other things.
I don't think it really produced the right imagery at all (it makes me think of something swooping and doing loop-de-loops through the air, though, at least), so it's at this point that I stopped trying to do the monsters thing.

During a period of trying to compose things to create distinct visual imagery, I tried composing pieces to describe various monsters from my games!
I only did two. This was for the 'snapper', which appear in games like Deliverance and FHO.
I don't know if it fits though; I think of snappers being more playful and less jerky than this suggests.

Tempestine

This is another one that I still like, which I consider to be a significant point in the development of my composing skills (I think the dates for many of these are wrong, since, according to them, I composed like five pieces on one day? I probably just re-saved them all on that day or something, so, regretfully, the original dates of composition are lost...).
I think I'd just recently heard the final movement from Beethoven's 'Tempest' sonata, and found it inspiring. This piece obviously can't compare with his, though.
It's meant to be a storm at sea or something, with winds that speed up and slow down... then there's a sudden lightning storm (the lightning bolts are the sudden, sharp, loud chords)... Or something like that, anyway. Use your imagination!11 o_O
I really like the ending chords for some reason. They seem unusual compared to what I usually do these days.

This is the original Marauder music for the galleon by that name which was the influence of the ship in Deliverance! More information can be found on the 'Star Marauder' entry for Deliverance's music, but just briefly, this was for a pre-Deliverance game based on a short story of mine.
I rather like this piece, despite the harshness of the midi instruments and the hollowness of the piece as a whole, because I find it amusing and think it sounds suitably 'goofy pirate ship'-ish.

FH: Lupin Battle

This one was composed much later than the other Lupin Theme (despite the 'composed' dates for these submissions being close together), when I had somewhat more experience and was in my 'second phase' of composing.
It was made for Fig Hunter, where you fight Lupin, a human chief of the 'wolf bandits', who also happened to be a lycanthrope who battled you and turned into a werewolf or something.
It's a silly piece of music... Vastly inappropriate, because rather than being grim and villainous, it's playful and unserious. Tsk.

Now this is an amusingly old piece!
It seems that my composing went through several stages... I can't find the ORIGINAL date of composition of this, but I think was some time in 2003. At around that time, I spent much of my time making modules for the game Neverwinter Nights, and this was one of my first forays into the world of games design and coding and such. As I got better at making modules (which, unsurprisingly, I started loads of and finished like one, which was, amusingly enough, called 'Governance de Magi' and was the basis for the story of MARDEK), I tried composing music for some...
My attempts at composition were embarrassing, and included things like this, which was one of the better ones. I only tried making a handful of pieces, then gave it up for a year or two.
When I returned to composition, I started being more 'serious' and had started learning the piano, so my knowledge of the workings of music was slightly better.
Pieces like THIS one, though, are rather more... chromatic... because I had less idea what I was doing and I was younger and more naive too.
So yes!

This was supposed to be the theme of some villain in something that I can't even remember... Oh, right! The NWN module that eventually was turned into the Fig Hunter game! He was in that. And, consequently, in the Fig Hunter game, where this music was used.

Honour & Stealth

Composed: 02/07/05
Duration: 1:50

Back in the earlier days of my composing, when I was still so excited to be able to do it at all, I came up with many spontaneous and strange ideas for compositions that I'd never have these days (just like when I was little, I'd come up for creatures like lingons that I still use now because my modern ideas aren't as appealing to me for some reason; feels like I've lost my imagination with age)...
THIS one was about NINJAS.
I think I'd recently seen an impressive film called Hero, which includes a segment where the hero fights another warrior with a spear-type weapon in a temple while it rains (I still remember it), as a blind old man plays what I think was a koto in the background, eventually leading to one of the strings breaking as he got more and more furious in his playing... I still think of that clearly when I listen to this music.
That film wasn't about ninjas, but I made a pre-Deliverance game (there were a surprising amount of those that were never close to being finished!) which did include ninja which talked in German accents for some silly reason... o_O
I used this for their hideout, but it wasn't composed for that purpose.
So, uh... yes! Isn't that fascinating?!

This was the Main Theme of the Fig Hunter game!
I thought it sounded rather 'jazzy' or something at the time.
It was based on an improvised piece I played on my piano in my early days of having it... That was the only time I've ever improvised for so long (I generally dislike improvisation), and I recorded what I was playing and stored it in the keyboard's memory... I think it's still there to this day!
I was going to use this general theme in the FHO Main Theme, but abandoned the idea when I found that there wasn't much I could do with it.

This is sort of significant and reminiscent to me...
Muriance, as a character, was in a much earlier game that I made but never released, and I composed a theme tune thing for him, which was basically a simpler version of this.
The MARDEK series features many old characters of mine that were never used... It's an interesting feeling, "reviving" them and fleshing them out and redoing their music and things... Yes. Interesting.

Legacy of the Hindalarr

This plays before you fight the boss.
It's meant to be a theme representing the alien race called the 'Hindalarr', who built the ship you explore on level 1 (those skeleton enemies are skeletons of them). They're sort of shamanistic, spiritual and tribal, and this music is meant to reflect that.

Level 1: A Dead Starship

Duration: 3:06

Ohgods... THIS took ages to get right! I went through like six entirely different versions before this one, trying to come up with just the right mood for level 1. Originally, I was going for quiet, spooky, unsettling pieces to suggest ghosts and that sort of stuff, but then I decided to do an upbeat, energetic 'THIS IS LEVEL 1' sort of thing instead.

All of the level music in Raider has the same structure, even though they don't sound the same. They all have an initial two sections that are then repeated, and then they contain a variation of the Raider Theme in the middle, and repeat their main melody again.

When you'd beaten the last boss, the ship was supposed to go into some kind of self-destruct mode or something, and you'd have to manually flee through the whole ship, backtracking all the way to the first room where Arkus' ship is. This music - in 7/4, which I basically never use - would have played. I think it's too slow for what it's meant to be for, but other than that, I was rather proud of it (largely because I'd successfully done something in 7/4, though)...

As of the time of posting, this piece isn't actually in the game yet. It was composed as the theme of the parasites that are plaguing the generation ship; in 5/4 to create an unsettling mood.
It ALSO contains what was going to be the last boss music, after repeating the calmer theme twice... You were meant to battle the Parasite Queen or something predictable like that, and this variation of the calmer theme would play.
I don't know if I'll ever get to use it though, which is why I'm submitting it now instead of it never being heard by anyone.

Gruen is Arkus' rival, of a sort, but there would have been much more to im than that had I finished the game (I still might finish it, but as of the time of posting this, it's not done)... He's a gloth, who are usually devoid of imagination and strictly lawful and bureaucratic, but he's a pirate for some reason. Yes, a pirate like Arkus, who raids dead ships looking for loot.
He's sort of slimy and untrustworthy, and this theme is meant to show that. Don't know if it succeeds at all though.

Also called Arkus' Theme, since it's the theme of Arkus Zei, the main character. It appears in many of the music tracks used in the Raider games.
It's a rather melancholy waltz, which might seem a bit odd for the genre (upbeat technoish stuff might be expected), but sort of fits Arkus' personality, maybe? I don't know. I like it, anyway.

Did I make this BEFORE I made the Lingonite track in SMECOF...? I know that they use a similar bit to tie them together, but... oh, wait. I think maybe I made a lingon-related track in Fig Hunter and used that as the base for this and the Lingonite track in SMECOF?
Oh, I can't remember. Anyway, this isn't a very interesting piece. And it's short.

Hymn of YALORT

The Hymn of YALORT was one of the very first pieces of music that I ever composed; perhaps THE first that I composed seriously! I made it when I was first starting to learn the piano (only a few years ago...) and starting the Yalortism stuff, and it was a bland piano solo with block chord accompaniment, made for my first attempt at a 'Yalortian game'. Eventually it became this 'arrangement' of it which is nearly identical, but uses different instruments.
It's used in MARDEK too... I wanted to create a variation of it that was BETTER than this one, but struggled and failed so I just used this.

This is another yet one I still like. I've made a point of composing 'generic village themes' to be very similar, using the same general melody and feel. Compare this to Goznor's music from MARDEK, and you might be able to notice the similarities. The village music in FHO is also similar, as was the village music in Fig Hunter (which was one of the first pieces I ever composed).

This is another one I'm still fond of. Originally it was meant to be used in Elemental Temples, I think, but it became a World Map track eventually somehow.

Boss Battle

This is far too short and lacking in depth! Still, I find some of the piano work interesting because it 'surprised' me at the time that I was able to come up with it; it didn't seem like my style or level of skill.

This should be called 'Dungeon 2' or something, but it's one of the tracks that I specifically gave a strange name to, so I'll title it as that...

Dungeon 1

I was proud of this one when I made it, but now I just find it too simple and hollow... You can hear similarities between this and later attempts at dungeon themes though (specifically Dungeon 2 from MARDEK).

People have complimented this battle theme specifically a few times, but now I just think "eugh! o_O" when listening to it...

Star Marauder

I think most of the music that was in Deliverance is rubbish now since it's so inferior to what I can compose now, but this is one of the ones that I still like.
The 'Marauder' was originally a sea-based ship (a galleon) in a (rubbish) short story that I wrote ages ago, and I tried to make a game out of it using the engine that originally got used for Deliverance... I didn't get far, but I composed a piece of music that would play on the Marauder. That piece of music is what this is based on, though the original one sounded far more 'piratey' and this one is 'spacey'.

Deliverance Theme

By request, I'm uploading the old music of Deliverance to this section...
This theme contains several themes, including the Hymn of YALORT, Peregrin's Theme (for some reason), and another theme for the planet 'Ehaiah' that was in the original Fig Hunter... Though they're subtle and might not be readily apparent.

The boss battle theme, which has a very Middle Eastern feel to it for some reason! Makes me easily think of battling a villain who's one of those archetypical Evil Viziers...

This battle theme seems to remind me of some of the music in Kingdom Hearts, based on some of the techniques that I used...

This one lets me easily imagine a quiet, dank cave with deep greyish-blues and water dropping from stalactites...

This one was sort of interesting to do, what with those choiry voice things... I find it very, uh, GRAND, possibly over-the-top, like much of this game's music.

This draws on the same melody as my other village themes in other games, which was first made for FHO, then Deliverance, then Goznor in MARDEK... See if you can notice it!
It sounds very, uh, farmy to me, this one.

I think this was the first piece I made for FHO... It's a dungeon theme! A very, uh, ADVENTUROUS and grand dungeon theme, meant to show the whole exciting, grand feel of the game or something.

The Main Theme from Fig Hunter Online. It's meant to sound heroic and majestic and such!
It took many tries to get right, but I'm satisfied with this result.
