Posts re MARDEK on Alora Fane!

◊ Posted by A β Pseudolonewolf

I'm posting about my current development progress exclusively on my ∞ Alora Fane site ∞ at the moment, so if you've got here via my released games, you'll find all my latest work there!

I'm working on MARDEK IV, you know!! Well, sort of. Though it's probably not what you expect if this is the first you've heard of it.

(I'm writing this because my site's stats show that this site is getting twice as many hits as my Alora Fane one. I suppose all the links in the games DO bring people here, after all! I may resume updating Fig Hunter in the future, but I don't know when that'll be.)

I know this post is 1 year old, but I only wanted to say that your games (not even Mardek) were awesome I really enjoyed them, well, me and my brother enjoyed your games, all of them, even the unfinished ones, and I also wanted to say that you (along with other game developers) ARE a big inspiration to me.
I hope you continue making more awesome games, I'm not rushing you, I'm just wishing you good luck, and thanks for making my childhood, and my brother's one we would never forget.

THANKS :)

Pseudowolf, I've been a lurker on your website, I don't know for how long. When I was a child, around 8 years old,I've checked on kongregate, on one of these days where I was bored...and then I found mardek.Right as I completed the 1st chapter, I waited excitedly for the 2nd.Right after I completed the 2nd, I've waited for the 3rd.All of these three games hold a dear place on my heart, and I will be honest. They are masterpieces. They might not be as deep as some other games, or as complex as others, they might not have great graphics, and honestly speaking, I do think that the mardek series had its flaws...but at the same time, these same flaws were what made the series special. It didn't try to cover its mistakes,it didn't try to make it look like what it isn't.
The lore was well developed, even more than some final fantasy games, and even now, when I occasionally wander in the game, I see a new name that I have not yet seen. You have developed even various religions on the game, even though we only saw three religions that were actually worshipped by characters(Yalort, Solaak, and the space saucer guys.), there were many others mentioned, in the Aeropolis' library for example.

I do not believe you are doing something wrong,I can see how good the game you are developing is.I am also looking forward to it, there is nothing wrong with that. But, Pseudowolf, there is an issue, that I'd like to point it out.I do not wish to criticize your work, but honestly, that is not mardek for me, and a change of names is needed. If you don't wish to work on the 'classic Mardek' as others are referring, and you truly wish to change it completely, please, make a new name.Just like Mardek was never deliverance, this new game that you are developing, is not Mardek. That's the thing that is currently bothering me, and I think I might speaking for others as well.I do not wish to criticize your work, and truly, I think you are a rare guy among all flash games developers.I'd say your works are closer to indie developers, and even console ones, considering how long, and how big, your projects are.

Please, take my advice to the heart. There were many great games that were ruined because the creators used their name needlessly, when the game was completely different from the previous games of the series.(Banjo-kazooie series, were another series that were held dear to my heart. The banjo-kazooie nuts and bolts IS a great game, but it is not a banjo-kazooie game, as an example of the issue I am talking about.)

I hope that I did not offend you, Pseudowolf, and did not offend any Mardek fans.I am just wishing that I could hope to solve this issue that everybody is talking about.

Pseudo doesn't check this site much, unfortunately, so he probably won't see your comment... but... Just as a note, sadisticenerd, he WAS originally planning to change the name to 'Rohoph RPG', as he said 'the game wasn't really about Mardek', but he kept the name as he got way too many complaints.

So really, no matter if he'd kept the name or not, he'd get complaints from both sides, most likely. I can understand why you want a name change, as the 'old MARDEK' was a ongoing series that's still popular and most people don't want the name 'stepped on or destroyed/it no longer fits/works', but there is the point that a lot of people WANT him to keep the name, despite what people are saying.

I don't really care either way, and I can see arguments from both sides, but I don't think he's going to change the name this far into development.

Though it's nice to hear that you're looking forward to the new game! I hear too many people trashing on the 'combat system', when it actually doesn't look too much different, just instead of lowering 'HP' your raising 'HP'. It's basically the same system in that sense. But oh well, change is hard for people, I guess!

Still, I'd like to see him link some of the OSTs from his old games nowadays, like Peregrin's theme (from Deliverance), some of the AFC ost pieces that was never heard by most people here (it's great, probably my favorite of all his tracks), the gym leader theme from Beast Signer, and the Tsar theme from Miasmon (which I REALLY want to buy, but can't due to it being pretty much nowhere to be found on the internet, unless I were to maybe record it or ask him. Oh well.)

So yeah, that.

Huh, thank you for explaining that for me.I admit, even a little ago, I was sad about the new art.Not as pixel-y, but at the same time, the more I see it, the more I see...it also has a charm to it.Not too cartoony, not too RPG-y, not too realistic. It almost looks like Pseudowolf wanted a mix of the three. Not too simple like mardek's, but at the same time, doesn't tries too hard to look unique. Not too comic-looking, but not too serious either,And not with the best graphics, but at the same time, it is pleasant to the eyes.I like it.I honestly like it.

The series is not the same as before, we all can agree with it.But at the same time, I believe we all should give a chance to this new series, and I do expect that it might be unique.Different from everything else. Not sure if it is for the best, or for the worst, but I do love a great variety, and I am sure that this is something that the game will bring us...but at the same time, I am a bit nervous.Everybody is either putting too little hope in the game, hurting Pseudowolf's feelings, or putting too much hope in the game, pressing him to some extend.Either way, I wish that the game has the same goal that Pseudowolf always had in mind for his game: to make a game that he feels it is great, and wishing to share it with us.We might be saying we're fans, but I believe, he see us as fellow gamers, just like himself...so, truly, I do not have any other advice to Pseudowolf, since I might either press him too much, or hurt him too much...but there are certain words, I still wish to say to him.Pseudowolf, if you are reading this, I wish to tell you...make a game you enjoy.

Creators, and geniuses, where always criticized by other people, because they tried new things. But yet, they are valued by society nowadays, even if before they weren't.I am sorry if I am pressuring you, by placing such high expectations on your work,
but yet...I believe you truly deserve these praises, and you truly should have more confidence on yourself.

PS: I apologize if my english looks bad.

Truer words have never been spoken. I miss the old Mardek. How this becomes it, I do not know. I don't whole-heartedly support the change, just as I resented the abandonment of Beast Signer and the original draft of Miasmon, but I shall not insult. If it somehow becomes possible to begin work on those projects again, please do so, Pseudo. It would make me, and a lot of other lifelong fans, very happy.

Also, this worries me. Does this mean Miasmon is no longer its own game? The corruption of both series confuses and frustrates me.

From the pictures I've seen on Alora Fane, it just doesn't look like Mardek to me. Everything is just so different, and the art style is the completely different as well. And seeing as you're moving to mobile, I'm probably not going to play it as I simply hate playing on my mobile. I may be wrong and I'll love it and I'm hope I'm wrong, but at the moment, I don't really have high hopes.

Sorry for being rude but I can't believe it, pseudolonewolf. This is the game version of a Self-help book. I came here to this site because the whole idea of the game was extremelly original and I loved the art of the game. After a few years I saw you releasing Mardek 2 (wonderful), then you changed the system and some of the art with Mardek 3 (at first didn't liked the changes to the system, but then understood and loved them). When Mardek 3 ended with that dramatic ending I was damn anxious for Mardek 4 and etcetera. And now you change the whole plot of the game? I respect your beliefs and understand your needs, but please respect the Mardek fans. Honestly, I feel like a librarian that went to work and found all the books he loved burnt and vandalized.

He could just never touch the series if you prefer.

You could also ignore it, too, and continue on with your life as you did before.

No?

Okay.

Do you like to read?Have you ever followed a whole series of books just to see it crushed to pieces?
For God sake, if he wants to write a story with kids with the powers of emotions like teletubbies fine, but please name something else, not Mardek. And don't you even dare to scold me.

So rather than letting MARDEK stay as dead as it used to be, A β Pseudolonewolf decides to do the only thing he can do to keep MARDEK alive in some form, which is to reboot it as a much more planned-out series, how is this worse than the alternative? Pseudo is not purging the old MARDEK from the web nor from your memories, there's nothing keeping you from enjoying the old series for what it is, since there is a lot to enjoy. Either way, you won't get the MARDEK 4 you're hoping for, so why make the new MARDEK a scapegoat?

How would you even know the new one is worse anyway, or like a self-help book? You've not played the game yet and you're already dismissing it. Not going into a game with an open mind only means you're going to try as see the game for what you think it is, and if you think it's bad, then you're only going to look for and notice the bad...

A β Pseudolonewolf is not burning or vandalizing any books, but you are already judging the new one by its cover, covering it with your judgement rather. I just hope people will try and look at the new MARDEK for what it is rather than for how it isn't just a faithful remake or a sequel.

I get what your saying. :D

But as people grow up they need things that make them happy.

Simply escaping to the world he created when he was a child i guess no longer made him happy, and therefore he could no longer find the energy to create the game.

This new Mardek reflects how Plusdolonewolf has grown up, and what he wants his games to be.

From the screenshots we have seen the humor is still there though! :D

But it seems your going to be a weak little kid for a lot longer....ALSO....wolf has no respect for mardek's character... as he writes that Daughan has no respect for it and he is the person he modeled himself after.

The more i think about it, the more it feels like he is mocking people like me... T^T

It actually looks a lot better than I had expected. Based on the trailer, the game looks like it has lots of potential for excellent character development and some pretty good artistic statements. I personally want to see more of the "taming [of] mental monsters" bit.

Plus, while the theme is completely different, the writing and gameplay seem to hold up to the original. Which I guess shouldn't be a big surprise, seeing as it's still one of Pseudolonewolf's games and all.

Overall, I guess I'm looking forward to it.
Though I do wish it were possible to make an account on Alora Fane.

I'm extremely excited about the new Mardek and already shared the news with my other friends. I'll even get my partner (who strongly dislikes videogames, considering them childish and inane) to play the first Chapters along with me.

Go, go, go! :)

hmm... Normally I am not negative on the outlook of your creations but I don't think this is Mardek. The battle style is different, the characters are altered making a new game. Truthfully this is a mismatch of everything you seemed to have wanted from Maisamoon and Alora Fane combined with Mardek characters. Is that a bad thing no not really but for those who play the first 3 Mardeks call it something different like ~Sir Mardec or ~Alfa where it leaves the other games untouched as a separate series.

I still follow you but I am not certain if I will play this new thing.

I haven't yet had a chance to see what MARDEK IV is, but from what other people say, it doesn't sound...MARDEK-y. MARDEK brought me to fighunter, and I-III are fantastic games. I played them through once, tediously doing all the sidequests and getting all the weapons, and when I accidentally cleared my browser cache and wiped out my saves, I happily did it all over again. But IV sounds like it's departed from the MARDEK "universe".

It sound's like you're going Final Fantasy with this series; as in, every succeeding game takes the best parts of the last one and throws in new stuff to make it completely different. While this does make for good games, it doesn't make for....what's the word.../unified/ games. I love MARDEK for it's story, but also for it's atmosphere-The battle system, the dialogue, character art...if one of these things changes into a whole new style...it's not the same.

Here's an example: The Simpsons. Take a look at the very earliest episodes, then at the newer ones. The animation style has changed, and the "feel" is changed as well.

So, while I appreciate your artistic skills, Pseudo, please take my advice and keep the MARDEk games feeling...MARDEK-y. Don't change the battle system, keep the art the way it is-I want to feel that I'm in the same universe.

Hell, I'll throw in one more example. Harry Potter. Imagine if the first 3 book were written by J.K. Rowling, then the 4th was written by, oh, Tolkein. I'll leave you to ponder on that.

Well. I dont know if you're going to read this comment...But maybe I'll get lucky ? Well i was thinking one thing for the game, the Gloria cauldron can make simple monsters to use as an 'acessory' for only one time, monsters like Ooze, Lizard,Poshgoblin etc I would like to have "Pets" in the game!

I hope you read this comment!

I think the fact that a lot of people are visiting this site and not Alora fane is the impossibility of making an account on Alora Fane. It might not seem like much and I understand your whole plan of creating separate communities but I believe it turns some people down that they cannot react to certain posts or generally chat with other users except here, of course.

Pseudo, I made this account in 2007, and visited nearly every day for four years. I played every one of your games, looked at every piece of art you posted, and I still listen to some of your music that I downloaded. I was a huge fan. Other stuff happened in my life, and you, coincidentally, didn't do much in the month following Mardek 3's release, so I eventually stopped coming to the site.
Today, I was looking for an RPG to play, and reminded myself about Mardek. Even if 4 wasn't done yet, I'd been several years since I played. I checked here, and started reading blog posts, to see what the status of 4 was, but also to see how you've been the past three to four years. I have come to a conclusion:

You need to leave your house. This is not a troll post, this is not complaining about games, this is not some kid saying he knows what's best for you. You can't boil people down to four letters, you can't stay inside forever, and you can't make a living as a game developer if severe depression makes it take 4 years to make a single game.

You need to go outside, make some friends, and get a job. YES, you have social anxiety, but staying inside forever isn't going to help that at all. Get a job at McDonalds flipping burgers two days a week. You will only have to talk to people a few times an hour, but at least you'll be talking to people. Go to a rec center or something and sign up for ANYTHING. At this point you don't need to make friends, you just need to not be a hermit.

Things aren't going to be better in the future if you never start fixing them. I don't want to seem to self-important, but if you want... not "advice", so much as a different "opinion" on what/how you should do, I'd be happy to give specific situations a review. Again, this feels egotistical, as you have a site full of people to talk to, but few of them are willing to take a harsher stance on this (it seems).

I hope you will not dismiss this as a toll post. I really did idol you for many years. But you need help. You yourself have said so, and only you can take the first step in helping yourself. Don't you want to be non-depressed again? I will be posting this message in various places. I'm willing to be banned to make sure you see this, because if you continue to sink deeper into depression, there's no point in anybody coming here anymore.

Great post Qazerowl! this is probably what pseudo needs not that he will heed it and not that he will not just ban you as a troll but I agree with your conclusion and wish someone who he may respect because they have followed him for awhile said it sooner. The true question is what is pseudo going to do once he sees this? I would prefer a blog on a programmer who works to find inspiration and has occasional anxiety attacks to a blog full of lots of arrows going nowhere and emotional downfalls.

I've looked at it all, and it honestly seems really awesome, Mr. Pseudo. But I'm curious. Since MARDEK IV is gonna end up as a massive overhaul into what is basically another world, what of the original I-III? Don't get me wrong, what you're making seems really awesome. But what will become of the original? Will it be left alone? Will you give it to someone else you deeply trust to continue in your stead? Or come back to it as a hobby years later? All of what you designed so far looks great and seems very intriguing, but I'm curious as to what you'll do with Belfan. I don't pretend to know how your mind works or how tiring it would be to make a long game suh as MARDEK, along with the accompanying three to five more parts of the story. But at the same time it seems kinda sad that there is a possibility that Belfan might never come to fruition. But that's just me. Either way, good luck with the new MARDEK.
